　本日6月11日に東京高裁が静岡地裁の決定を覆し、無実の死刑囚・袴田巌さんの再審開始を認めないという決定を下しました。

　かつてプロボクサーだった袴田さんを長年支援してきた日本プロボクシング協会は、この決定に、大きな驚きと共に強い怒りを禁じ得ません。

　4年前に静岡地裁が「拘置をこれ以上継続することは耐え難いほどの正義に反する状況」とまで表現した再審開始決定に対して、その決定を覆すほどの説得力のある根拠を検察が示すことが出来たとは到底思えません。明らかにミスジャッジであり、不当判定と言わざるを得ません。

　袴田さんは50年もの長い時間を死刑囚として生きて、すでに82歳と高齢になってしまいました。私たちの願いは、命あるうちに袴田さんの腰に「無罪」というベルトを巻かせてあげることです。

　私たち日本プロボクシング協会は、最高裁での特別抗告審において正当な判断が下され、すみやかに再審が開始されることを心より希望し、さらに力強く袴田さんへの支援を続けていくことを誓います。

Statement

Tokyo High Court has rendered the decision today, June 11, that reject the commencement ofthe retrial of the innocent death row inmate, Mr.Iwao Hakamada, overturning the decision made by Shizuoka District Court. The Japan Pro Boxing Association, who has for many years supported Mr.Hakamada, a former professional boxer, is shocked and deeply angered by this decision.

The Shizuoka District Court expressed in their decision for the commencement of the retrial that "prolonging [Mr.Hakamada's] imprisonment any longer is a situation of unbearableinjustice". It is hard to believe that the prosecution has displayed any evidence convincing enough to overturn such a decision.

This is an obvious misjudgement, and cannot be expressed in any other way but an unjust decision.

Mr.Hakamada has spent about 50 years of his life as a death row inmate, and is already at the old age of 82 years old. It is our hope that Mr.Hakamada is able to wear the belt of "Innocence" while he is alive.

We at Japan Pro Boxing Association sincerely wish that a just decision shall be made by the Supreme Court at the special appeal hearing, promptly commencing the retrial for Mr.Hakamada. Also, we pledge to continue to support Mr.Hakamada ever more strongly.
